The shape of words and letters is purely an abstract construct that lends structure and meaning to our everyday cognitive life. In contrast, the marks by the artist are a spontaneous action as a result of a single ongoing moment of pure feeling, but interpretation of meaning is ambiguous. Each object, mark, image word, manipulates the other. The layer of perspex containing image, or text (taken from a conversation between two teenagers talking about whether or not they would have “pretty babies”) and mark making, sits above the base of paper, wood or felt, screen prints and mixed media pieces. The compositions have distinct physical identities, but due to their positioning are forced to interact with the other. The void between the surfaces permits the two dimensional forms to co exist, while competing for recognition, but ultimately providing a dialogue within the structure of the work. It is in the interaction of these two layers that conflict is exposed.
Dependent upon light, text and image only physically touch with shadow, but visually interact at all times.
